Goeido suffers eye orbit fracture in Hakuho bout

Ozeki Goeido suffered a fracture in one of the orbital bones around his left eye during the recent Summer Grand Sumo Tournament, he said Saturday.

The injury occurred on the 12th day at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan, when he received a blow from the elbow of Monglian yokozuna Hakuho, who went on to win a record-extending 37th championship with a perfect 15-0 record.

Goeido, who has filed the doctor’s diagnosis with the Japan Sumo Association, said he will need three weeks to recuperate at home.

« The pain has subsided. There was no displacement of the eyeball and I’m not looking to have an operation, » said Goeido, who was assured of his participation in Nagoya tourney in July.

His stablemaster Sakaigawa said, « I advised him to take the last three days off, but he was firm in continuing. »

The stubborn ozeki won on the 13th and 14th days and ended the basho with a 9-6 record.
