Hakuho frôle la défaite mais reste en tête
Le grand champion mongol Hakuho a conservé son avance au tournoi du Grand Sumo de Kyushu après avoir survécu à un match serré contre Takarafuji ce vendredi.
Hakuho (12-1), a été à deux reprises proche de la défaite sur ce tournoi. Après la charge initiale de Takarafuji, Hakuho a essayé de pousser son adversaire hors de l’anneau, mais Takarafuji a esquivé, surprenant ainsi le yokozuna qui à dû serrer les freins pour éviter une sortie du dohyo.
Le yokozuna a fait volte-face pour revenir dans le combat et faire face à son adversaire, mais le maegashira n ° 5 a eu le temps d’attraper le mawashi de Hakuho pour le pousser à travers le ring. Le mongol a maitrisé le mouvement, ne permettant pas à Takarafuji de poursuivre ses intentions de le pousser dehors. Sentant l’urgence, Takarafuji sacrifia l’équilibre pour la vitesse, mais alors qu’il se précipitait vers Hakuho, celui-çi lui infliga sa sixième défaite par hatakikomi. Le yokozuna s’éloigna avec un sourire ironique, reconnaissant qu’il avait frôlé la défaite.
La heya Hakkaku à encore été brillamment représentée par Okinoumi et Hokutofuji, respectivement maegashira n°12 et n°3. Ces derniers ont remporté 2 victoires, et restent dans les pas de Hakuho avec un ratio de 11-2.
Okinoumi a attiré l’attention de la foule grâce à sa victoire sur Tochinoshin (7-6). Tochinoshin était aux commandes, les deux mains sur la ceinture de son adversaire et l’amenant vers le bord du dohyo. Mais le Géorgien a échoué à terminer son action, Okinoumi a calmement maitrisé la situation et évité la défaite avec une projection sous le bras.
Pendant ce temps, pour leur sixième rencontre Hokutofuji a propulsé Yoshikaze (6-7) hors de l’anneau, obtenant ainsi sa cinquième victoire consécutive et améliorant son record de carrière contre le sekiwake à 4-2.
Goeido (8-5) a sécurisé son tournoi grâce à une victoire par défaut sur son compatriote l’ozeki Takayasu (8-5) qui a dû se retirer du tournoi en raison d’une blessure à la cuisse. Cette victoire « cadeau » lui permet de rompre une série de trois matchs perdus consécutivement.
Takayasu, malgré sa blessure, aura réussi à sauver son rang d’ozeki grâce à sa huitième victoire obtenue mercredi dernier.

Hakuho remains on lead after narrow escape
Mongolian grand champion Hakuho maintained his lead in the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament after surviving a close bout against Takarafuji on Friday.
Hakuho (12-1), the lone yokozuna competing at the 15-day meet, twice came close to tasting defeat. After the initial charge, Hakuho tried to shove his opponent out of the ring, but Takarafuji dodged and the yokozuna was barely able to put on the brakes before stepping out at Fukuoka Kokusai Center.
The yokozuna spun around in the nick of time to face his opponent, but the No. 5 maegashira was able to get a hand on the back of Hakuho’s belt and thrust him across the ring. But the Mongolian somehow kept his feet and Takarafuji failed to pursue quickly enough to shove him out. Sensing the urgency, Takarafuji sacrificed balance for speed, but as he rushed forward Hakuho easily slapped him down to his sixth loss. The yokozuna walked away with a wry smile, acknowledging his close shave.
Hakuho is gunning for his record-extending 40th championship, and his first since the July tourney in Nagoya. He missed the entire Autumn meet due to pain in his ankle.
No. 12 maegashira Okinoumi and his Hakkaku stablemate Hokutofuji maintained their winning ways to stay one win back of the yokozuna with 11-2 records.
Okinoumi drew a huge cheer from the crowd with his win over No. 6 Tochinoshin (7-6). Tochinoshin was in command, with both hands on his opponent’s belt and steering him toward the edge. But the Georgian failed to finish as well as he started, and Okinoumi calmly staved off defeat with a slick underarm throw at ring’s edge.
Meanwhile, No. 3 Hokutofuji charged Yoshikaze (6-7) out of the ring in their sixth career encounter, earning his fifth straight win and improving his career record against the sekiwake to 4-2.
Goeido (8-5) secured a winning record by default after fellow ozeki Takayasu (8-5) pulled out of the tournament due to thigh injury. The gift win saw the ozeki snap a three-match losing streak.
Takayasu, who was fighting as a demotion-threatened « kadoban » ozeki, picked up his eighth win on Wednesday to ensure his place in sumo’s second-highest rank.
