Yokozuna Kakuryu falls to defeat, Hakuho, Harumafuji win on Day 2

Yokozuna Hakuho eased through his second match at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament on Jan. 12 and got an added bonus–in the final bout of the day, compatriot and rival Kakuryu hit the deck in a very unexpected upset to rank-and-filer Takarafuji.

Hakuho let top maegashira Tochinoshin get inside for a belt hold, but waited for his chance and calmly tossed his Georgian opponent to the dirt at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan for his second win of the competition. Hakuho is looking to win his 33rd Emperor’s Cup championship, a feat no other wrestler has ever accomplished.

Kakuryu, on the other hand, had a miserable day.

The junior yokozuna was off target from the outset, slipping into a retreat after a confused face-off and flailing for the belt as top maegashira Takarafuji came at him like a bulldozer. He held on at the edge, but Takarafuji had his number and threw him down to his first loss.

« I was really happy, » Takarafuji said of his first win over a yokozuna.

Yokozuna Harumafuji battered komusubi Takayasu into submission for his second win. Though he’s always a wildcard, Harumafuji looked great on opening day, and he was back in fine form for his second win. From the look on his face as he watched Takayasu fall from the ring, he is ready to show he is still a force to be reckoned with.

Ozeki Kisenosato, another potential contender, jumped the gun on the first try and had a weak face-off the second time out but still managed to work his way around Tochiozan and push the komusubi down with a shove to the back as he tried to launch a thrusting attack. Kisenosato hasn’t looked very fine-tuned so far, but has managed to win both his bouts while he works out the kinks.

Ozeki Kotoshogiku was also a winner, claiming his second bout by getting the better of maegashira No. 2 Ikioi.

Ozeki Goeido, meanwhile, fought a hard match against No. 2 maegashira Terunofuji, giving up his belt early on and struggling desperately to regain the advantage. Though he was on the verge a couple of times, he held on valiantly until the much bigger Terunofuji leaned and twisted him off his feet. It was a big loss for Goeido, who like Kotoshogiku, is facing demotion if he fails to get at least eight wins by the end of the tournamnent.

« I tried to keep him off the front of my belt, and when that didn’t work so well, I just let my body respond naturally, » said Terunofuji, who stands 191 centimeters tall.

Dropping to his second loss in a row, Mongolian sekiwake Ichinojo was pulled off balance and into a losing tumble by 36-year-old veteran maegashira No. 3 Aminishiki, who improved to 1-1.

Bulgarian sekiwake Aoiyama barely survived his match against maegashira No. 3 Endo, who had him moving backward with a determined grappling attack but leaned in too deep and fell to the dirt just before Aoiyama stepped over the edge. Aoiyama improved to 2-0 while Endo falls to 1-1.
