Terunofuji pulls out 5th win to stay tied for Nagoya lead

NAGOYA (Kyodo) — Newly promoted ozeki Terunofuji dug in deep to see off sekiwake Tochiozan and cement his place among the leading pack at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Thursday.

Terunofuji had his hands full as Tochiozan (4-1) twice went in for the kill, but the ozeki stood firm and after working Tochiozan up to the edge of the ring, he got a right-handed grip on the back of his mawashi and deployed a beltless arm throw to send him over the ridge.

Terunofuji, who improved to 5-0 against Tochiozan, pulled off a stunning championship victory at the summer meet in May.

The 23-year-old Mongolian, aiming to become only the ninth ozeki to win the Emperor’s Cup on his debut, is tied for the lead with yokozuna duo of Hakuho and Kakuryu, and rank-and-filer Kagamio.

Hakuho, chasing a 35th Emperor’s Cup, recovered from an early blow against second-ranked maegashira Aoiyama (2-3) before flooring the Bulgarian with a textbook uwatenage overarm throw.

Kakuryu, who missed the previous two meets due to a left shoulder injury, slapped Myogiryu down to his third loss of the tournament.

In other bouts at the top, Kotoshogiku picked up the second of eight wins he needs to preserve his ozeki status, huffing and puffing his way past top-ranked maegashira Tochinoshin (1-4).

Kotoshogiku is wrestling with his rank on the line for the fifth time in his career following a « makekoshi » 6-9 record in May.

But Goeido, who pulled out of the summer meet with two days left owing to a fractured left shoulder, was no match for towering Mongolian sekiwake Ichinojo (2-3) and was rammed out to a third defeat.

The last ozeki to take to the raised ring, Kisenosato, nearly fluffed his lines but managed to recover to send Ikioi (0-5) sprawling with an armlock throw, maintaining his unbeaten record (9-0) against the third-ranked maegashira.

In the lower ranks, Egyptian grappler Osunaarashi extended his winning streak to four bouts after losing on opening day, the No. 8 maegashira getting the better of seventh-ranked Tamawashi (2-3) with a hikkake arm-grabbing force out.

Forty-year-old Mongolian warhorse Kyokutenho picked up his first win of the tournament, the No. 11 maegashira sending down 14th-ranked Toyohibiki with a beltless arm throw, ending his opponent’s perfect record in the process.
