Hakuho marches on, Kakuryu crashes to 1st loss at Summer basho

Hakuho manhandled Kaisei on Thursday to remain unbeaten, but fellow Mongolian yokozuna Kakuryu surrendered his share of the lead after an upset defeat to Ikioi on the fifth day of action at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo.

Seeking a record-extending 37th career title here, Hakuho was always in control against Brazilian komusubi Kaisei (1-4) and after getting a left-handed grip on the front of his belt, shoved him out for a convincing win.

The Spring basho champion, who improved his record to 8-0 against Kasei, is tied for the lead a third of the way into 15-day meet at Ryogoku Kokugikan with ozeki pair Goeido and Kisenosato.

Kakuryu dropped into a share of second with compatriot and grand champion Harumafuji, who charged out third-ranked Bulgarian maegashira Aoiyama (1-4), and six others.

After two false starts in the day’s final bout, newly promoted sekiwake Ikioi (2-3) seized the momentum after the tachiai and followed through to send Kakuryu packing with a kotenage armlock throw.

Goeido let Shodai have it with both barrels, bulldozing the winless No. 2 maegashira out in a matter of seconds to retain his share of the lead.

Kisenosato did not have it all his own way in his bout against Takarafuji (1-4), but the ozeki mustered enough strength to force the top-ranked maegashira out and stay on track for an elusive first championship title.

New Year champion Kotoshogiku rebounded from his upset defeat to Takarafuji on Wednesday, the ozeki getting both arms around komusubi Okinoumi (1-4) to set himself up for a yorikiri force out win.

Terunofuji suffered his third loss in a row after opening with back-to-back wins, top-ranked maegashira Myogiryu bundling the Mongolian ozeki over the straw bales to chalk up his first victory of the meet.

Newly promoted sekiwake Kotoyuki (1-4) slipped back into losing ways after being slapped to the dirt by giant Mongolian No. 2 maegashira Ichinojo, who improved his mark to 3-2.
