J7 – Terunofuji sort Kotoshogiku et garde ses espoirs

Natsu basho 2015 : résultats de la septième journée

Terunofuji sort Kotoshogiku

Yokozuna rivals tied for top spot

Mongolian yokozuna Hakuho and Harumafuji both emerged unscathed on a day of upsets in the upper ranks Saturday to stay tied for the lead heading into the second week of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

Tournament favorite Hakuho, gunning for a 35th title, and Harumafuji improved to 6-1 and stayed in a tie for top spot with sekiwake Terunofuji and five other wrestlers.

No ozeki are among the leading pack, and Kisenosato (5-2) was the only wrestler at sumo’s second rank to win his bout after Goeido and Kotoshogiku lost.

Hakuho produced another textbook win in the day’s finale at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan, banging up Sadanoumi (4-3) at the charge, grabbing him around the neck and then marching the third-ranked maegashira out of the ring from behind.

Harumafuji had his hands full early on against Kitataiki (2-5), but once the yokozuna had spun the fifth-ranked maegashira around and got control from behind it was game over.

At ozeki, Goeido was no match for Tochiozan (3-4), slumping to a third loss after getting blasted out by the komusubi and Kotoshogiku (4-3) was next to bite the dust, the Sadogatake ozeki succumbing to sekiwake Terunofuji, who has now won six straight after losing on opening day.

Kisenosato salvaged a little pride for the ozeki rank after dodging a major bullet in his bout against Egyptian maegashira Osunaarashi (4-3).

Osunaarashi twice laid into Kisenosato, choking him with a tight throat grip before the ozeki soaked up another charge and turned the tables at the ring’s edge to score a hard-fought win.

Elsewhere, sekiwake Myogiryu was upset by No. 1 maegashira Takarafuji (4-3) and dropped to 3-4, while Mongolian komusubi Ichinojo was saddled with his fifth defeat after getting bumped out by top-ranked maegashira Tochinoshin (2-5).

In the lower ranks, ninth-ranked Endo, whose popularity has risen despite some patchy performances in the elite makuuchi division, finally picked up his first win of the tournament.

Wrestling with an injured left knee, Endo forced out Arawashi and left the 12th-ranked maegashira as the only wrestler in the top flight yet to win at this tournament.
