Hakuho égale le record de victoires de Chiyonofuji
Hakuho a accompli un autre exploit en égalant le record du yokozuna Chiyonofuji avec 1 045 victoires après avoir battu le maegashira 4 Kagayaki ce lundi.
Le yokozuna Hakuho est toujours l’unique lutteur invaincu de cette compétition et se rapproche un peu plus d’un 39ème titre. Sa victoire facile sur Kagayaki lui permet d’obtenir sa neuvième victoire.
Âgé de 32 ans, Hakuho est désormais second ex-æquo avec le légendaire yokozuna Chiyonofuji, décédé en juillet de l’année dernière, dans le record absolu de victoires. A cette époque, celui que l’on surnommait « le loup », avait 3 ans de plus que Hakuho.
Le record absolu est à portée de main puisqu’il s’agit de celui détenu par l’ancien ôzeki Kaio avec 1 047 victoires. Sauf blessure ou événement imprévu, Hakuho est assuré de devenir le nouveau recordman avant la fin du tournoi.
Hakuho affrontera mardi le maegashira 5 Chiyoshoma (4-5), ce dernier ayant battu aujourd’hui l’ôzeki Goeido.
« Je suis vraiment content de cela« , a déclaré Hakuho, qui a reçu un bouquet de fleurs et a fait signe à la foule en retournant dans les vestiaires.
Aoiyama a rebondi après sa première défaite survenue la veille mais sa victoire d’aujourd’hui contre Chiyonokuni (3-6) n’a pu être validée qu’avec la concertation des juges.
Chiyonokuni, le visage ensanglanté après avoir pris un coup violent au visage, semblait avoir envoyé Aoiyama vers sa deuxième défaite. Mais les juges ont vu Chiyonokuni sortir de l’anneau avant que son adversaire ne touche le sol, et ont déclaré Aoiyama vainqueur.
« J’étais sûr d’avoir vu son pied sortir d’abord, donc je suis content que cela ait été confirmé et d’avoir gagné« , a déclaré Aoiyama. « Le tout est de rester concentré et de bien lutter, et de continuer à le faire tous les jours« .
Takayasu, qui avait remporté sept matchs consécutifs après avoir perdu le premier jour, n’a pas réussi à battre le komusubi Yoshikaze (5-4). Juste après le tachiai , Yoshikaze a agrippé le mawashi de son adversaire et a simplement poussé Takayasu qui n’a offert qu’une résistance minimale.
L’autre yokozuna Harumafuji (6-3), a été surpris par le maegashira 4 Ura (6-3), qui a remporté sa première victoire de carrière sur un grand champion (kinboshi).

Hakuho ties late Chiyonofuji with 1,045 career wins
Hakuho accomplished yet another feat by tying late yokozuna Chiyonofuji with 1,045 career victories after beating fourth-ranked maegashira Kagayaki at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Monday.
Yokozuna Hakuho remained peerless at the 15-day tournament and en route to his 39th championship by improving to a perfect 9-0 with an easy win over Kagayaki, whom he slammed to the dirt in their first career meeting.
The victory stood him side by side with one of sumo’s legends in Chiyonofuji, who passed away in July last year. The 32-year-old Hakuho, now the winningest yokozuna ever, is three years younger than Chiyonofuji was at the time of his final victory.
Hakuho moved within two wins of former ozeki Kaio’s all-time record, which, barring injury or some unforeseen event, will almost certainly be rewritten by the end of the tourney.
Hakuho will face No. 5 maegashira Chiyoshoma (4-5) on Tuesday. Chiyoshoma defeated ozeki Goeido (5-4) on Monday.
« I’m really happy about this, » said Hakuho, who was given a bouquet of flowers and waved to the crowd at Aichi Prefectural Gynasium on his way back to the dressing rooms.
The Miyagino stable wrestler is one win ahead of No. 8 Aoiyama in the title race here and two ahead of a pack of four, including new ozeki Takayasu.
Aoiyama rebounded from his first defeat of the tourney a day earlier, but cut it close as the judges had to convene over his win against No. 11 Chiyonokuni (3-6).
Chiyonokuni, his face bloodied after taking a hard slap to the face, appeared to have sent Aoiyama tumbling to his second loss. But the judges caught Chiyonokuni stepping out of the ring before his opponent hit the ground, declaring Aoiyama the winner.
« I was sure I saw his foot go out first, so I’m glad that was confirmed and I was able to win, » Aoiyama said. « The big thing is to stay focused and wrestle well, and keep doing that each and every day. »
Takayasu, who had won seven straight after losing on the first day, failed to put up much of a fight against komusubi Yoshikaze (5-4). After locking horns at the tachiai, Yoshikaze got a firm grip on the belt and simply pushed Takayasu out with minimal resistance from the ozeki.
The other yokozuna in the field, Harumafuji (6-3), was stunned by fourth-ranked Ura (6-3), who earned his first career victory over a grand champion.
