Sumo wrestler Hakuho's coach arrested over assault on private driver

The sumo coach of grand champion Hakuho was arrested Wednesday for allegedly injuring his private driver in July by repeatedly hitting him with a metal bat, police said.

Kumagatani of the Miyagino stable, whose real name is Kazuyuki Yamamura, is suspected of striking the 31-year-old driver several dozen times with a bat in late July at an apartment in Nagoya, where a grand sumo tournament was being held.

Kumagatani, 45, admitted to the charge and was quoted by the police as saying, « That was no doubt what I did. »

Kumagatani was arrested after the victim reported to the police in early August about the injury that took around two weeks to heal.

Before retiring in 2004, Kumagatani was a second-tier juryo division wrestler named Kanechika.

He was the Miyagino stablemaster when Mongolian Hakuho was promoted to yokozuna in 2007, but was demoted to a coach in 2010 after a weekly magazine reported that he confessed to match fixing to a female acquaintance.

« I’ve just heard (of the arrest) and am surprised, » said Hakuho.

Japan Sumo Association Chairman Kitanoumi, who was Kumagatani’s master, said the arrest was « regrettable » but did not comment on possible punishment, saying the association was not certain it had all the facts yet.

Following the 2010 scandal, Kumagatani said he would accept dismissal should he engage in misconduct again.
