Harumafuji passe en tête du championnat
Le yokozuna Harumafuji a franchi une étape importante vendredi vers le huitième titre de sa carrière en prenant la possession exclusive de la tête du championnat à deux jours de la finale.
Harumafuji a maîtrisé l’ôzeki Kisenosato dans le dernier combat de la journée en décrochant sa 11ème victoire du tournoi.
La défaite de Kisenosato le relègue au même score que le yokozuna Hakuho et le maegashira Takanoiwa à 10-3.
Harumafuji était rapide, aussi bien sur ses pieds qu’avec ses mains. Juste après le tachai, le mongol a trouvé une prise à la ceinture de Kisenosato .
Kisenosato a tenté de contrer et d’agripper de sa main gauche le mawashi de Harumafuji, mais le yokozuna a fait un bond en avant pour charger son adversaire vers l’extérieur de l’anneau.
Harumafuji combat Goeido samedi, tandis que Kisenosato affrontera Hakuho. Le maegashira 10 Takanoiwa sera opposé au maegashira 2 Takarafuji.
Hakuho, qui vise un troisième titre consécutif et son 38ème championnat, a rebondi après sa défaite de la veille en l’emportant face à Goeido. L’ôzeki s’est effondré à terre juste après le tachai et chute à 7-6.
Pour la première fois de sa carrière, Takanoiwa conserve ses chances de victoires en remportant par défaut sa rencontre avec Chiyonokuni.
Chiyonokuni (8-5), qui est de retour dans la division makuuchi pour la première fois en 13 tournois, s’est retiré plus tôt dans la journée à cause d’une blessure au genou droit.
Le komusubi Takayasu a perdu pour la deuxième journée d’affilée quand il a été poussé par le bulgare Aoiyama. (7-6) et fait partie des cinq lutteurs qui sont à 9-4.
Takarafuji a également subi sa quatrième défaite auprès de Kaisei. Pour ses débuts comme sekiwake, le brésilien n’est plus qu’à une victoire du kachi koshi, son plus haut niveau.
Le maegashira 5 Shodai (9-4) a dominé Terunofuji qui a encore besoin d’une victoire pour conserver son statut d’ôzeki.
Le maegahsira 7 Ichinojo et le maegashira 5 Yoshikaze sont a égalité avec neuf victoires.
Les premiers yûshô sont arrivés dans les divisions inférieures dont voici les vainqueurs :
- Makushita yûshô : Ryusei (7-0), Kagamiyama beya.
- Sandanme yûshô : Asakoki (7-0), Takasago beya.
- Jonokuchi yûshô : Shuji (7-0), Kise beya.

Yokozuna Harumafuji seizes sole lead in Nagoya
Mongolian grand champion Harumafuji on Friday took a major step towards his eighth career title by seizing sole possession of the lead with two days remaining at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.
Harumafuji overpowered promotion-chasing ozeki and overnight co-leader Kisenosato in the day’s finale at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium to score his 11th win at the 15-day basho.
Kisenosato, Mongolian grand champion Hakuho and rank-and-filer Takanoiwa share second at 10-3.
Harumafuji was quick on his feet and got both hands on Kisenosato’s belt after charging in low at the tachiai.
Kisenosato attempted to counter and get his left hand on Harumafuji’s mawashi, but the yokozuna surged forward and charged him over the edge of the ring.
Harumafuji fights ozeki Goeido on Saturday, while Kisenosato faces off against Hakuho. No. 10 maegashira Takanoiwa is up against second-ranked Takarafuji.
Hakuho, who is aiming for a third straight championship win and a record-extending 38th title of his career, bounced back from his third defeat of the tournament by beating Goeido, who collapsed in a heap at the charge and dropped to 7-6.
Takanoiwa kept his title hopes alive thanks to a default win over ninth-ranked Chiyonokuni.
Chiyonokuni (8-5), who is back in the top makuuchi division for the first time in 13 tournaments, withdrew earlier in the day with a right knee injury.
Komusubi Takayasu lost for the second day in a row when he was shoved out by Bulgarian No. 6 maegashira Aoiyama (7-6) and is among five wrestlers with 9-4 marks.
Takarafuji also suffered his fourth defeat after coming a cropper against Brazilian grappler Kaisei, who moved within one win of a winning record on his debut at sumo’s third-highest rank of sekiwake.
Fifth-ranked Shodai (9-4) overpowered injury-prone Mongolian Terunofuji, who still needs one more win from his last two bouts to retain his ozeki status for the next tournament in September.
Seventh-ranked Mongolian Ichinojo and No. 5 maegashira Yoshikaze also have nine wins.
