Jour 14 – Regroupement sur les deux premières places
Rien ne va plus dans ce tournoi de Juillet à Tokyo, où après l’avant-dernier jour de combat, ils sont encore quatre rikishi à briguer cette première place demain, ce qui leur rapporterai la coupe de l’Empereur.
L’homme de tête, Terunofuji, le surprenant ex-ôzeki revenant de blessure au rang de maegashira 17, avait une victoire d’avance sur son poursuivant direct, le nouvel ôzeki Asanoyama. Il devait gagner contre le sekiwake Shodai pour assurer sa première place en tête. Malheureusement pour lui, le sekiwake, placé juste derrière Asanoyama avec 10 victoires, était lui aussi extrêmement motivé. Sous les yeux de l’ancien ôzeki Kaiô, maintenant oyakata et shimpan pour ce combat, les deux lutteurs se jetèrent l’un sur l’autre, réussissant une prise au mawashi. Pourtant, Shodai, voyant qu’il ne prendrait pas l’avantage sur Terunofuji, rompait en arrière, emmenant avec lui le maegashira et le déséquilibrant. Il n’a plus eu qu’à le repousser à l’extérieur pour remporter sa 11ème victoire. Terunofuji reste donc à 12 victoires.
L’ôzeki Asanoyama devait donc gagner son affrontement contre le maegashira 7 Terutsuyoshi pour rejoindre Terunofuji en tête. Profitant de son petit gabarit, le maegashira s’est courbé très bas au taichi-ai, évitant ainsi la charge de l’ôzeki. En même temps, il réussit à attraper la jambe de son adversaire au passage, le faisant tomber dans la foulée. C’est une défaire amère pour Asanoyama, car s’il perd sans presque combattre, il gaspille une occasion d’atteindre la tête du classement pour le dernier jour du tournoi.
Un quatrième rikishi va s’inviter à la fête demain : il s’agit bien sûr de l’autre sekiwake Mitakeumi. Lui aussi à 10 victoires au début de la journée, il a bien conscience qu’un succès l’amènerai lui aussi probablement à disputer des phases finales avec les 3 autres lutteurs. Son combat contre le maegashira 16 Kotoeko paraissait à sa portée, malgré les 9 succès du maegashira. Après un tachi-ai puissant de Mitakeumi bien encaissé par son adversaire, c’est Kotoeko qui essaya de prendre l’avantage avec de vigoureuses poussées successives. Mais Mitakeumi fit parler da technique et profita de l’élan imprimé pour projeter son adversaire à terre en dehors du cercle sacré. Mitakeumi atteint donc sa 11ème victoire, à égalité avec Asanoyama et Shodai, et seulement à 1 victoire d’écart de Terunofuji !
Tout se jouera donc demain, dernier jour, entre ces quatre rikishi, avec des possibilités d’égalité et donc de matches de barrage (kettei-sen) entre ex-aequo.

Shodai, Terutsuyoshi stage huge upsets on penultimate day
Sekiwake Shodai and rank-and-filer Terutsuyoshi each earned a dramatic win on Saturday, filling the penultimate day of the July Grand Sumo Tournament with more than its share of surprises.
Shodai was the first to steal the show by throwing a monkey wrench into sumo’s feel good story of the year handing No. 17 maegashira Terunofuji his second loss and denying him a chance to clinch his first championship in over five years.
Fighting in the elite makuuchi division for the first time since January 2018, Terunofuji was still able to hang on to his one-win tournament lead. That came thanks to a shocking victory by No. 7 Terutsuyoshi, his Isegahama stablemate, over ozeki Asanoyama, who ended the day tied with Shodai and fellow sekiwake Mitakeumi at 11-3.
In the finale, Terutsuyoshi (8-6) charged head-first toward the ozeki’s waist, wrapped up his opponent’s left leg and flipped him over in a stunning and unorthodox upset.
« I was thinking of how my opponent will start the bout since last night, and I thought I only have one shot at winning, » Terutsuyoshi said. « So he (Terunofuji) still has the sole lead. I want him to win tomorrow. »
In what was set up to be the day’s big match, Shodai got the jump on his opponent and was able to drive Terunofuji back toward the straw, the 28-year-old Mongolian’s left foot sliding as he struggled to find traction.
When Terunofuji arrested his reverse motion, Shodai yanked him downward and off balance. Terunofuji briefly escaped but was unable to fend off Shodai’s beltless arm throw.
Of the four former ozeki competing at the lower rungs of the division, two made progress toward earning 10 wins.
Georgian No. 11 maegashira Tochinoshin improved to 9-5 by throwing down No. 5 Hokutofuji (8-6), while No. 13 Takayasu (9-5) opened the top-division action by forcing out No. 16 Nishikigi (6-8).
Kotoshogiku had been on track for 10-plus wins, but the 36-year-old No. 14 maegashira was forced out by No. 12 Sadanoumi (7-7) to suffer his third-straight defeat and fall to 8-6.
The komusubi pair of Daieisho and Okinoumi each won. Daiesho (10-4) dispatched No. 6 Enho (5-9), while Okinoumi thrust down Bulgarian No. 4 Aoiyama (5-9).
A day after securing a winning record in his first tournament in the upper division, makuuchi debutant Kotoshoho was slapped down to his sixth loss by No. 10 Myogiryu (10-4), ensuring he won’t reach 10 wins at the first go.
The July meet is the first grand tournament held in four months following the cancellation of May’s event due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. It was moved from its traditional location in Nagoya to cut down on travel during the pandemic.
