Hakuho remporte son 40ème tournoi
Le Yokozuna Hakuho a remporté le 40ème titre de sa brillante carrière lors du tournoi de Kyushu ce samedi.
Hakuho a entamé l’avant-dernière journée du tournoi avec seulement une victoire d’avance sur les maegashira Hokutofuji et Okinoumi (respectivement n°3 et n°12), mais aucun d’eux n’a pu maintenir la pression sur le mongol, qui a triomphé lors du dernier match.
Portant la compétition sur ses épaules, le yokozuna (absent lors du tournoi de septembre pour une douleur à la cheville) a évincé le maegashira n°9 Endo du dohyo pour améliorer son score à 13-1 et remporter du même coup le tournoi avec un jour d’avance.
Par la puissance qu’il a envoyé sur la charge initiale, Hakuho a tellement surclassé Endo qu’il en a presque perdu l’équilibre en glissant légèrement sur le sable avant de pouvoir mener à terme sa victoire (cf photo).
« J’étais motivé (après les défaites de mes deux challengers), et j’ai pu exécuter mes techniques« , a déclaré Hakuho. «En mars, avec mon groupe de soutien, nous nous sommes beaucoup investit pour créer les conditions favorables pour remporter un 40e championnat cette année, j’ai réussi à le faire lors du dernier tournoi de l’année et je suis heureux de ce résultat ».
« Lorsque vous revenez après une pause (en septembre) la crainte de perdre est bien présente, j’étais inquiet mais j’ai consciencieusement suivi mes soins pour être à même d’offrir un résultat de qualité à mes fans. »
Lors de l’affrontement des jeunes prometteurs, Hokutofuji (11-3), âgé de 25 ans, a perdu contre Onosho, âgé de 21 ans (7-7), qui combattait pour la première fois au quatrième rang le plus élevé du sumo : le rang komusubi.
Après un faux-départ, Onosho a été repoussé en bordure du cercle subissant une poussée vigoureuse et continue d Hokutofuji. Mais tandis que le komusubi glissait sur le côté et vacillait, l’élan de Hokutofuji le porta à son tour sur le bord, Onosho, le plus rapidement lucide physiquement a fourni l’impulsion nécessaire pour mettre fin au combat.
Okinoumi (11-3) a perdu face au plus expérimenté maegashira n°1 Tamawashi (10-4). Okinoumi, qui est pourtant resté concentré alors qu’il subissait la charge initiale, a perdu le contrôle pour chuter sous l’impulsion d’une gifle de son adversaire.
Cette victoire a nivelé la statistique des rencontres entre ces 2 adversaires d’ages équivalents à 9-9 (33 ans pour Tamawashi et 32 ans pour Okinoumi).
Aminishiki, qui a fait l’histoire de ce tournoi à l’âge de 39 ans en tant que lutteur le plus âgé de tous les temps à revenir en division élite makuuchi après rétrogradation, a cependant échoué à remporter une huitième victoire cruciale.
Il a tenté de déborder Chiyomaru (6-8), 26 ans, beaucoup plus lourd. Aminishiki a essayé de gifler et de bousculer son adversaire de 191 kilos, mais il ne pouvait ni le bouger, ni le contourner, et il a finalement été repoussé.

Hakuho clinches 40th grand sumo championship
FUKUOKA (Kyodo) — Yokozuna Hakuho clinched the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament championship, the 40th title of his illustrious career on Saturday.
Hakuho began the penultimate day of the 15-day event at Fukuoka Kokusai Center one win ahead of No. 3 maegashira Hokutofuji and No. 12 Okinoumi but neither could maintain the pressure on the Mongolian master, who triumphed in the day’s final bout.
With everything on his shoulders, the yokozuna, who sat out September’s grand tournament with ankle pain, plowed out No. 9 maegashira Endo (9-5) to improve to 13-1 and clinch his championship with one day remaining.
Hakuho overpowered Endo on the initial charge so completely that the yokozuna nearly lost his balance on the sandy surface before he could complete his victory.
« I was motivated (after my two challengers’ defeats), and I was able to execute my techniques, » Hakuho said. « In March, at a meeting of my support group much was made of winning a 40th championship this year. I was able to make it in my final chance and I’m happy with the accomplishment. »
« When you come back from a break (in September) you are concerned about losing. I was anxious about that. But I did my rehab properly so I could put on a good show for the fans. »
In a clash of up-and-coming youngsters the 25-year-old Hokutofuji (11-3) lost to 21-year-old Onosho (7-7), fighting at sumo’s fourth highest rank, komusubi, for the first time.
Onosho was forced back to the straw on the charge. A full-blooded shove nearly pushed him out. But while the komusubi slipped off to one side and teetered on the brink, Hokutofuji’s momentum carried him to the edge of the straw. Onosho recovered first and supplied the shove needed to end it.
Okinoumi (11-3) lost a clash of veterans with top-ranked maegashira Tamawashi (10-4). Okinoumi, however, looked tight on the initial charge, and was forced back to the straw. He fought back from the edge but plowed forward out of control. Tamawashi stayed one step ahead of him in his retreat and was able to slap the onrushing Okinoumi to the sandy surface.
The victory leveled the 33-year-old Tamawashi’s record against the 32-year-old Okinoumi at 9-9.
Aminishiki, who made history in this tournament at the age of 39 as the oldest wrestler ever to fight his way back into the elite makuuchi division after demotion, failed to earn a crucial eighth win.
The No. 13 maegashira tried to outflank the much-larger, 26-year-old Chiyomaru (6-8), who kept his opponent squarely to his front and gradually forced him back. Aminishiki tried to slap and shove at his 191-kilogram opponent but could neither budge him nor get around him and eventually was shoved out.
