Terunofuji to be back for spring tournament

Ozeki Terunofuji, who pulled out of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament with a broken right collar bone and damaged meniscus in his left knee, said Tuesday he will return to the ring for the spring basho in March.

The 24-year-old completed a physical at Ryogoku Kokugikan and said he is back on his weight-training routine ahead of the March 13-27 meet at Edion Arena in Osaka.

« Of course, » Terunofuji said, when asked if he would compete in the next tourney. « I’m getting better. The doctor said I’m recovering too quickly. »

« I’m going to have to change the way I’ve been doing things. The most important thing is not to get injured. »

Terunofuji withdrew for the first time in his career after a fifth-day defeat to Kyokushuho in the January tournament.

Terunofuji will need a winning record at the spring basho to retain sumo’s second-highest rank, facing potential demotion to sekiwake.
