Hakuho voit ses espoirs s’envoler
Harumafuji se maintient à la tête de la division après sa belle victoire contre un adversaire déterminé dans l’avant dernier combat du jour.
Le yokozuna mongol, qui cherche à obtenir son huitième titre, a fait face à un sérieux défi imposé par Goeido (7-7). L’ôzeki a contraint Harumafuji à reculer jusqu’aux ballots de paille juste après la charge initiale mais a échoué à deux reprises à le renverser.
Le match semblait se diriger vers une impasse mais Harumafuji a feinté sur sa gauche et Goeido a mordu à l’appât. L’ôzeki a déplacé son poids pour y faire face devenant ainsi une proie facile pour le yokozuna qui l’a ensuite projeté par uwatenage. Cette 29ème victoire en 38 matchs contre Goeido laisse Harumafuji (12-2) une avance cruciale sur ses rivaux Kisenosato et Takanoiwa à 11-3.
Le yokozuna Hakuho, qui était à égalité avec Kisenosato et Takanoiwa, s’est propulsé imprudemment vers l’extérieur de l’anneau laissant une opportunité à Kisenosato qui s’est déplacé pour terminer le travail.
Après un faux départ, Hakuho (10-4) a opté pour un tachai rapide et semblait avoir l’avantage. Kisenosato a reculé vers le bord de l’anneau tout en gardant son équilibre. L’ôzki a été en mesure de provoquer le chute du yokozuna. Avec cette quatrième défaite, Hakuho voit ses espoirs de titre définitivement s’envoler.
Hakuho et Harumafuji s’affronteront en combat final dimanche, tandis que Kisenosato sera opposé à Goeido.
Dans les précédents matchs, Takanoiwa s’est battu sans relâche contre Takarafuji. Le mongol a été repoussé au moment de la charge initiale mais il a vite eu recours aux gifles pour garder à distance son adversaire.
Malgré ses 20 kg supplémentaires, Takarafuji n’a pas été en mesure de suivre le rythme des coups soutenus de Takanoiwa.
L’ôzeki Terunofuji a perdu lors d’un combat difficile contre le komusubi Takayasu (10-4) arrivant à une inquiétante septième défaite. Terunofuji sera donc contraint de remporter à tout prix la victoire demain contre Kaisei s’il souhaite rester ôzeki au prochain tournoi.
Le maegashira 6 Aoiyama est parvenu à une majorité de victoires après avoir gagné contre Kagayaki, c’est la première fois en un an que le bulgare est kachi koshi.
En jûryô, Amakaze s’est emparé du yûshô en remportant avec un jour d’avance le championnat de la division.

Harumafuji retains lead with classy win
Harumafuji clung to the lead with a gutsy win over a determined opponent on Saturday, the penultimate day of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.
Looking to win his eighth grand sumo title, the Mongolian yokozuna faced a severe challenge by ozeki Goeido (7-7), who forced Harumafuji back to the straw on his initial charge and failed twice to topple him after that.
With the match appeared heading to a stalemate, Harumafuji feinted to his left, Goeido took the bait, shifted his weight that way and was easy prey for a textbook « uwatenage » overarm throw. The win, 29th in 38 career bouts against Goeido, left Harumafuji (12-2) one ahead of ozeki Kisenosato and No. 10 maegashira Takanoiwa at 11-3.
Yokozuna Hakuho, who started the day at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium tied with Kisenosato and Takanoiwa at 10-3, propelled himself from the ring with a careless charge that Kisenosato did well to evade.
After a false start, Hakuho (10-4) came out fast on the tachiai and appeared to have his man where he wanted him. But while Kisenosato was retreating to the ring’s edge, he maintained his balance and was able to steer the Mongolian master out of the ring.
Hakuho and Harumafuji will square off in Sunday’s final bout, while Kisenosato will take on Goeido — against whom he holds a 23-13 career edge.
In his earlier match, Takanoiwa relentlessly came at No. 2 maegashira Takarafuji. After Takanoiwa was repulsed on his opening charge, he resorted to vicious haymaker slaps when his man got too close.
Although outweighed by nearly 20 kilograms, Takanoiwa repeatedly landed blows and kept moving until he had the advantage and was able to drive Takarafuji (9-5) from the ring.
Ozeki Terunofuji lost a tough fight to komusubi Takayasu (10-4) to see his record fall to 7-7, meaning he will need to win his match against Brazilian sekiwake Kaisei, also 7-7, on Sunday or relinquish his rank for the next tournament in September.
With two bad knees, Terunofuji has been vulnerable to wrestlers who could get around him, but Takayasu defeated his larger opponent by coming straight at him in a flawless effort.
